Best Ereaders for 2017

Best Ereaders 2017

  1. Amazon Kindle Paperwhite – best budget ereader

  • The most popular Kindle device and with good reason. It does all the essential functions exceptionally well and at a good price point. Although it wasn’t launched in 2017 it’s still an exceptional device. So, if you are looking for a dedicated ereader that doesn’t have any of the extra bells and whistles (e.g. weatherproof, premium, large screen, etc) then this definitely should be your first choice. As with all Kindle devices though, the main limitation is that it is tied to their proprietary Amazon eco-system. This means you can only download books directly from Amazon’s bookstore (.mobi format). However, the Amazon ebook store is arguably the best on the market so this alone should not be a major issue.

  1. Amazon Kindle Oasis – best premium ereader

  • If you’re looking for the best of the best ereading experience, then the 2017 Kindle Oasis is your match. It is a premium ereader with a 7” display (as opposed to the 6” Paperwhite). It is also waterproof, has a large storage (8GB/32GB), and physical page-turn buttons to name just a few of its awesome features. So, as long as you’re already sold on using the Amazon eco-system then this is as good as an ereading device gets. Albeit at a much higher price point than most.

  1. Kobo Aura One – best large screen device

  • The Kobo Aura One has the largest screen on the list (7.8”) which is a big positive for lots of readers. However, it really depends what you are looking for as some prefer the smaller, easily held in one-hand 6”-7” size of most ereaders. Nonetheless, it is the best ereader Kobo has to offer and similarly has an impressive set of features. This includes being waterproof and having the most reading customization options of any of its competitors. This allows you to fully personalize your reading experience. But the best part of owning a Kobo is that it has the most versatile reading capability. Unlike Kindle devices you can easily read any of the following file formats: epub, epub3, pdf, mobi, jpeg, gif, png, bmp, tiff, txt, html, rtf, cbz, cbr.

  1. Nook Glowlight 3 – uses Android software and has physical page-turn buttons

  • The recently launched Nook Glowlight 3 is a worthy alternative to both the Kobo and Kindle devices. The most obvious advantage it that it has physical page-turn buttons. Only the more than double the price Kindle Oasis has this feature on this list. Another one of the best features of the Glowlight 3 is the auto-adjusting light. This makes reading easy both in low-light and bright-light conditions. Also, being powered by Android software gives you a lot of flexibility for reading formats. So, overall, the Nook Glowlight 3 doesn’t necessarily excel in any category but does offer good value considering the lower price point.

  1. Kobo Aura H2O – most versatile mid-priced device

  • The Kobo Aura H20 is a mid-priced device with a lot of the same perks as the Kobo Aura One. Albeit it has a one-inch smaller screen (6.8”). Although, it is probably aimed more at competing with the Paperwhite than say the premium Oasis or Aura One. Therefore, other than the versatility of Kobo devices, its main advantage over the Paperwhite is that it is waterproof. And by waterproof we mean it can withstand up to 60 minutes under two meters of water. Therefore, reading by the pool or in the tub will be of no concern. However, being a mid-priced device, it really only targets those who cannot decide between going all-in on a premium ereader (Oasis, Aura One) or just sticking with the basics (Paperwhite, Glowlight 3).
